TODAY'S UPDATES

Today is Friday, July 30, 2010.

Brown and York Avenue beaches in Spring Lake and the Terrace and Beacon beaches in Sea Girt are closed due to rainfall and the resulting storm water discharge from Wreck Pond. L Street beach in Belmar is also closed due to rainfall.

All other lifeguarded ocean and bay beaches are open today and for the weekend.

Today's coastal surveillance flight was performed from Raritan Bay south to Little Egg Inlet. Beach and water conditions are good.

This web page is updated each weekday afternoon after flight reports are filed and water quality results are received from the labs. This page will be updated on weekends as needed to reflect changing conditions.

About the Program
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection administers the Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services and local environmental health agencies. Recreational beach water quality monitoring is performed routinely on Mondays and throughout the week as necessary at 186 ocean monitoring stations.

Ocean recreational beaches are subject to opening and closing procedures of the State Sanitary Code and must be resampled when bacteria concentrations exceed the primary contact standard of 104 enterococci per 100 mL of sample. Consecutive samples that exceed the standard require the closing of the beach until a sample is obtained that is within the standard.

Health or enforcement agencies may close beaches at any time at their discretion to protect the public's health and safety.
